In Blue Moon Spring, three dancers go on a personal journey of listening and moving to jazz music. They approach jazz as a philosophy, more than a genre. The dance becomes an ongoing conversation. The performers use agreed-upon frameworks as springboards for movements, deviations, and wild ideas. They practice opening to the specific vibrations of each moment and create an improvised dance that we discover together with them.

The musical selection of the piece reflects certain qualities of jazz, such as care, playfulness, friction, in-betweenness, sensuality and celebration. By letting existing music interact with music written especially for the performance, the piece draws history into a contemporary, complex web of sounds.

Each performance is unique: the dancers practice staying vulnerable and passionate through improvisational frameworks, dancing together with their differences, aligning mastery and intuition and dreaming wide awake.

A taste of our creative process

The Routledge Companion to Jazz and Gender - Edited By James Reddan, Monika Herzig, Michael Kahr "What would jazz without patriarchy sound like?"
Aki - nader
Animal Joy - Nuar Alsadir "We leek truths from our bodies all the time."
Infinity - John and Alice Coltrane "[John] was showing me how the piece could include other sounds, blends, tonalities and resonances such as strings. He talked about cosmic sounds, higher dimensions, astral levels and other worlds, and realms of music and sound that I could feel."
But Beautiful - Geoff Dyer "He didn't play the piano really. His body was his instrument and the piano was just a means of getting the sound out of his body at the rate and in the quantities he wanted."
Ghosts - Albert Ayler
Bodies of Water - Astrida Neimanis "We must learn to be at home in the quivering tension of the in- between. No other home is available.”
Coming Through Slaughter - Michael Ondaatje "So I can make something unknown in the shape of this room."
Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser - Charlotte Zwerin (1988)
Jazz - Toni Morrison "I had written novels in which structure was designed to enhance meaning; here the structure would equal meaning... I wanted the work to be a manifestation of the music's intellect, sensuality, anarchy; its history, its range, and its modernity."
Space 1.8 - Nala Sinephro
Criss-Cross - Thelonious Monk
Effortless Mastery - Kenny Werner "Surrender is the key, and the first thing to surrender is one of your most prized possessions: your obsessive need to sound good!"
